Australia’s newest and most technologically advanced cinemas are right in Docklands just next to the Melbourne Star
They’re circular, with a gas barbecue station in the centre and a round picnic table. They have shade umbrellas and LED lights. They’re bright orange. You may have seen them floating in the Harbour, and thought, wow, those look like so much fun, what on earth are they? Well, I’m here to tell you: they are the Aqua Donuts, and they are incredible. You can hire out these bad boys for two hours at a time, and you don’t even need a boating license to operate them. These are great for anything, including a day out with the gals, family time, or some good old corporate bonding. I mean, what’s better than being out on the water? O’Brien Icehouse is Australia’s largest and most respected ice arena. Nestled in Melbourne’s Docklands in amongst the city’s other greatest sporting and cultural icons, it has become one of Australia’s strongest symbols of sportsmanship and excellence. Situated next door to a shopping centre and entertainment precinct, it’s the perfect venue for a full day out.
O’Brien Icehouse is a world-class facility, attracting some of the greatest sports people from around Australia to train and compete in our Olympic-standard arena. Our commitment to the enjoyment of our visitors has lead us to be known as one of the city’s favourite destinations for families, friends and organisations alike.
Lessons are offered for several ice based sports and games including figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating and curling. If spectating is more your style, we host national and international figure skating events and are home to two Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) teams – Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs as well as the Melbourne Ice Women’s team (AWIHL).
The Icehouse includes a café, known as the Igloo Café, which serves a range of drinks and light snacks. Those looking for a unique venue can book private function rooms for corporate events, team buildings, private events and kid’s birthday parties.
First time skaters can hire skate aids to help them get around the ice. The rink also offers discount admission on Tuesdays (outside of the school holidays).
To get to O’Brien Group Icehouse, you can travel by car or there are a number of trams which travel to Waterfront City – stop D-11. Catch tram #70 from Flinders Street, tram #86 from Bourke Street or the city circle tram to the last stop. Walk along Docklands Drive and turn right at Pearl River Road. It is approximately 350 metres to our front door.
We are dedicated to creating extraordinary experiences for every person who enters our doors, regardless of age or skill-level, and with the help of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, O’Brien Icehouse will continue to be the beating heart of ice sports in Australia.
