Melbourne?s Northbank Goods Shed revitalisation project is one step closer to reality as developer Riverlee announce that works are set to begin on the precinct?s historic wharf.
Initial works are set to commence in November for a period of four weeks, before pausing over Christmas and New Year, with structural works to begin in earnest in January 2018.
Over the Christmas period, the adjoining public reserve will be open to the public before it is then temporarily closed for the duration of the construction period.
During construction works, access for pedestrians and bicycles along the river between the Jim Stynes and Seafarers Bridges will be restricted, with alternative routes and detours to be signposted in order to minimise any inconvenience.
First constructed in 1895, approximately 220m of the wharf will be restored and structurally reinforced, which will extend the asset?s lifespan for at least 50 years.
Freyssinet Australia, whose past projects include the construction of the Bolte Bridge and Webb Dock upgrade in Melbourne, has been appointed as the head contractor, with an estimated six-month construction timeline.
These structural works will pave the way for the future redevelopment of Riverlee?s Northbank Goods Shed project which will see the historic shed redeveloped into a premier waterfront destination encompassing residential, hotel and retail amenities along with a new 3500sqm public park.
Designed by award-winning architect firm, Fender Katsalidis, and landscape architects, Oculus, Riverlee?s vision for the site includes a luxury hotel, waterfront apartments and the creation of a new public park that will essentially connect the missing pedestrian link between the Docklands and the Yarra River?s Northbank.
Under the plans, the site?s historic Goods Shed known as ?Shed 5? will be restored and repurposed into a premium waterfront event space, celebrating the original roof trusses. The site?s heritage listed crane will also be retained and restored.
The plans include provisions to refurbish the wharf and opportunities to integrate a pontoon to promote waterfront activation.
